When Are Translation and Legalisation Required?

There are several situations in which individuals in Thailand may need to have their documents translated and legalised:

  • Participating in court cases
  • Signing contracts with government entities
  • Applying for licenses
  • Submitting property applications
  • Applying for visas or work permits
  • Enrolling in educational institutions abroad
  • Submitting medical documents for treatment overseas
  • Applying for international marriage registration
  • Conducting business with foreign companies or investors

Why Are Translation and Legalisation Necessary?

Thailand has its own set of laws and regulations, which can differ significantly from those in other countries. Translation and legalisation ensure that your documents comply with Thai legal requirements and are easily understandable to local authorities. Here are a few reasons why these services are essential:

  • Some documents may be in languages other than Thai or English, necessitating translation
  • Legalisation verifies the authenticity of signed, stamped, and sealed documents
  • As English is a secondary language in Thailand, some officials may require documents to be translated into Thai for clarity
  • Translation and legalisation ensure compliance with Thai law

    Our Legalisation Services

Legalisation Service with Consular Department MFA: Your Comprehensive Guide

Looking for a reliable legalisation service in Thailand? New Stamford is here to simplify the process of legalising your important documents with the Consular Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

What is Legalisation and Why is it Important?

Legalisation involves authenticating your documents with an official seal from authorised officials, such as a Notary Public or an officer from the MFA. This process certifies the validity of your documents, making them legally acceptable in other countries. Documents like birth certificates, marriage registrations, and company registration certificates need to be legalised to be considered legal and valid abroad.

    Translation for Foreign Language Documents

Foreign language documents must be authenticated by the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in the relevant countries, or by foreign embassies in Thailand. After authentication, the documents can be translated into Thai and legalised by the MFA.

Do I Have to Legalise My Documents with the Embassy?

If you plan to use foreign-issued documents in Thailand or Thai-issued documents abroad, you may be wondering whether legalising your documents with the embassy is necessary. The answer is yes, in most cases, document legalisation is a crucial step to ensure that your documents are legally recognised and accepted in the destination country.

Why Legalise Documents with the Embassy?

Legalising documents with the embassy serves several important purposes:

    1. Authenticates the document’s origin and confirms its legitimacy
    2. Ensures compliance with the legal requirements of the destination country
    3. Facilitates the acceptance of the document by authorities and institutions in the destination country

Without proper legalisation, your documents may not be considered valid or admissible for official purposes, such as registration, legal transactions, or employment.

Legalisation Process for Foreign-Issued Documents Used in Thailand

To use a foreign-issued document in Thailand, you must first have it legalised by either:

    1. The Thai embassy or consulate in the country where the document was issued, or
    2. The embassy of the issuing country located in Thailand.

After this initial legalisation, the document can be translated into Thai (if necessary) and further legalised by the Department of Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Legalisation Process for Thai-Issued Documents Used Abroad

For Thai-issued documents that need to be used abroad, such as government-issued documents like birth certificates and house registration certificates, the process involves:

    1. Legalising the document at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
    2. Translating the document into the required language by an authorised translator
    3. Legalising the translated document at the embassy of the destination country in Thailand

    What is a Notary Public?

In most countries, a Notary Public is an officially licensed individual tasked with performing various legal functions, such as:

    • Authenticating signatures and documents
    • Witnessing affidavits or statements made under oath
    • Administering oaths and affirmations
    • Attesting and certifying certain classes of documents

The act of notarization itself serves as a guarantee of a document’s authenticity or the actions of the signatories. It’s like a seal of approval, giving your documents the legal equivalent of a gold star sticker.

The Role of Notarial Services Attorneys in Thailand

While Thailand doesn’t have Notaries Public per se, certain lawyers are granted the authority to function as Notarial Services Attorneys. These legal professionals are regulated by the Lawyers Council of Thailand, the governing body overseeing notarial practices in the country.

To become a Notarial Services Attorney, a Thai lawyer must successfully complete a professional training course and be registered with the Lawyers Council. It’s like earning a black belt in the art of document authentication.
