Guide for In-Country Visa Conversion into ED
Please note that rules regarding visa conversion to an ED (Education) visa are subject to change. We advise you to speak with our staff for the latest updates. If you plan to enter Thailand on a Tourist visa, visa-exemption, or visa on arrival, ensure you have sufficient days remaining to request a visa conversion. Immigration mandates a minimum processing time of 21 business days. Additionally, it’s important to factor in extra time for the enrollment process and requesting the Ministry of Education (MoE) approval letter.
Check Your Eligibility:
Contact our school at least 45 days before your current visa expires to assess your eligibility for the program. Provide us with copies of relevant passport pages, including the personal information page, all previous Thai visa stamp pages, your last entry stamp, visa sticker, and any extension stamps (if applicable).
Visa Conversion Process:
You are required to process the conversion of your visa to an ED visa in person at Chiang Mai Immigration only:
Day 1: Drop off your physical passport.
Day 2: Attend Chiang Mai Immigration in person to complete the process. Your passport will be returned to you.
Day 3: This day is left free in case additional time is needed on Day 2. You’ll receive a 21-day “under consideration” stamp. During this processing period, refrain from traveling outside Thailand.
Visa Hearing Process:
The school will represent you at Chiang Mai Immigration for the Visa Hearing Process to secure a 3-month ED visa on your behalf. You have the option to drop off your physical passport or send it by post. If you choose to send it by post, please use reliable services such as Thai Post (EMS) or Kerry.
Step #1:
Check your eligibility
Plan to apply to New Stamford at least 45 days before the expiration of your current visa. To determine your eligibility for the program, please consult with our school and provide us with a copy of the relevant pages of your passport, including the personal information page, all previous Thai visa stamp pages, your last entry stamp, visa sticker, and any extension stamp (if applicable).
Step #2: 1-2 days
Apply for the course & make a deposit payment
After receiving the deposit equivalent to the first 3 months’ program fees, enrollment information, and supporting documents, we will issue an acceptance letter within 24-48 hours.
Step #3: 1 day
NS will prepare your MOE application
Please allow us 1 business day to complete and submit your application to the Ministry of Education. You will then receive an email requesting your electronic signature on the application and supporting documents.
Step #4: 7-14 days
Wait for the approved Letter of Acceptance (LOA)
The average wait time for the LOA to be returned from the Ministry of Education is 7-14 business days, depending on the number of applications submitted. We can provide an estimate of the wait time when we submit your application.
Step #5
Approved LOA and Visa Documentation
Once we have received your approved LOA, we will notify you and plan the timeline for your visa conversion application. You will then need to visit our school in person to take an enrollment photo, sign the visa paperwork, and provide us with your original passport and all required documents. You will be required to pay the remaining balance of your program fees within 7 days.
Step #6
NS will apply for your visa conversion
After you have visited our school, we will initiate the process of filing your visa conversion at Chiang Mai Immigration the next day. You will then be required to attend Chiang Mai Immigration in person on the following day in the afternoon to complete the process.
Step #7
Visa Conversion & Attendance at Chiang Mai Immigration
To obtain your education visa, it is required that you attend Chiang Mai Immigration in person, accompanied by our staff who will guide you through the process. The visa application process involves taking a photo, which usually takes around 30-45 minutes, after which your passport will be returned to you. Following this, you will be granted a 15-day period of consideration during which the immigration office will review your application and documents to ensure everything is in order for your visa approval.
Step #8
Visa Hearing Process & Start attending classes
You will be required to send your passport to our school, and our team will attend your visa hearing on your behalf. If all of your documents are in order and approved, you will be granted a non-immigrant ED visa, allowing you to stay in Thailand for 90 days. You can pick up your passport from the school the following day. You can start attending classes. It is essential to attend classes regularly and maintain a full-time student status.
Step #9
Extend your visa every 90 days
To extend your visa, you will need to go to immigration every 90 days and submit the necessary documents, including proof of attendance and scores to apply for an extension. Our school will remind you and arrange all the necessary visa extension documents for you.
Step #10
Enjoy your stay and learn Thai culture
By following the above steps, you will not only have the opportunity to learn the Thai language and culture but also immerse yourself in the vibrant and fascinating culture of Chiang Mai, one of the most beautiful and charming cities in Thailand. You will have the chance to make new friends, explore the city’s attractions, and experience its rich history and traditions.
