University-Run Courses VS Normal Language Courses

Understanding the Differences Between University-Run Courses and Normal Language Courses

University-Run Courses:

  1. New Stamford School assists with the enrollment process and visa arrangements.
  2. Classes are conducted by the university that New Stamford School refers students to, not by New Stamford School itself.
  3. Students are issued an education visa through the university they are referred to, not through New Stamford School.
  4. Visa duration and renewal process vary depending on the course length:
For 15-month courses: Students initially receive a 3-month visa and then renew it for an additional 12 months.
For 12-month courses: Students initially receive a 6-month visa and then renew it for another 6 months.
  5. Visa renewals must be done in person at the Chiang Mai Immigration Office, and students are required to present themselves for each renewal.

Normal Language Courses:

  1. Classes are conducted by New Stamford School.
  2. Students are issued an education visa through New Stamford School.
  3. The education visa is valid for a maximum of 3 months at a time.
  4. Students need to renew their visa every 3 months until the completion of their course duration.
  5. For example, if a student enrolls in a 12-month course, they will need to renew their visa 3 additional times after the initial 3-month visa.
  6. Visa renewals must be done in person at the Chiang Mai Immigration Office, and students are required to present themselves for each renewal.

Can I leave Thailand during my studies?

Traveling During Your Studies with a Thailand Education Visa: What You Need to Know

Yes, you can leave Thailand during your studies. However, there are several important points to consider:

Single-Entry Education Visa

  • All students will receive a single-entry education visa.
  • You must apply for a re-entry permit with immigration before leaving Thailand. Failure to do so will result in the termination of your visa, and you will not be entitled to any refund.
  • If you leave Thailand, you must return before your visa or extension expires, as indicated on your passport, to renew your visa.
  • The expiration date of your visa may not coincide with the end date of your course duration.

Visa Renewal

  • 15-Month Students: You will initially receive a 3-month visa and will need to renew it for an additional 12 months. We strongly recommend waiting until your visa is renewed for the additional 12 months before leaving the country. If unavoidable, you must return to Thailand before the expiration of the 3-month visa to renew it. Failure to do so will result in visa termination, and fees are non-refundable.
  • 12-Month Students: You will receive an initial 6-month visa and must renew it for another 6 months. You must return to Thailand before the expiration of the first 6-month visa to renew it. Failure to do so will result in visa termination, and fees are non-refundable.
  • Leaving the country and not returning to renew your visa before its expiration will result in visa termination, and you will not be entitled to any refund.

Certificate of Student Status

  • Before leaving the country, contact the university to obtain a Certificate of Student Status. This process can take more than 14 weeks, depending on the university’s policy, and the fee can range from 500-1000 baht.
  • This document may be required when re-entering Thailand or renewing your visa.

Course Attendance and Progress

  • Be mindful of the duration of your trip, as prolonged absences may affect your course progress and attendance requirements.
  • Inform New Stamford School or the referred university about your planned absence to ensure it does not conflict with mandatory classes or exams.

Re-entry into Thailand

  • When re-entering Thailand, ensure you have all necessary documents, such as a valid passport and your single-entry education visa.
  • Be prepared to present your Certificate of Student Status and other supporting documents to immigration authorities upon re-entry.
  • Be ready to answer questions about your university, including the name of the university, its address, the names of your classmates, and the name of your teacher.
  • Immigration officers may test your Thai language skills, even if you are enrolled in an English course, so be prepared to demonstrate your basic Thai language proficiency.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and trouble-free experience when leaving and re-entering Thailand during your studies.

Guide for Thai Embassy or Consulate Application

Choose Where You Want to Apply for Your Education Visa:
Research Your Embassy/Consulate

Before you begin your visa application process, it’s crucial to research the embassy or consulate where you’ll be applying. Each location may have different rules, office hours, and holiday schedules. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Understand Variations: Thai embassies and consulates worldwide may have variations in visa application procedures and requirements. It’s essential to familiarise yourself with the specific guidelines of the embassy or consulate where you intend to apply.

  2. Office Hours and Holidays: Take note of the office hours and holiday schedules of the embassy or consulate. This information will help you plan your visit accordingly and avoid any delays in the application process.

  3. Appointment Scheduling: Check if you need to book an appointment in advance. Some embassies/consulates may have availability within 2-3 weeks, while others may require booking 1-2 months in advance. Note that holidays may extend waiting times.

  4. Criminal Background Check: Determine if you need to prepare a criminal background check, as this document may take 2-8 weeks to obtain depending on your country.

  5. Thai Embassy Directory: For easy access to a comprehensive list of Thai embassies and consulates worldwide, visit the Thai Embassy Directory. This directory provides essential contact details and information about each embassy or consulate, including their location, contact information, and website.

By researching your embassy or consulate beforehand, you’ll be better prepared to navigate the visa application process smoothly and efficiently.

Check Your Passport
  • Ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in Thailand.
  • Check that your passport has at least one blank page for the visa stamp. Before flying, it is advisable to have at least 3 blank pages, as not having enough blank pages may result in the airline or immigration denying boarding or entry
